PEACE AND TRADE
The relationship and interdependence between trade and peace is evident, but often overlooked. Numerous examples show that peace initiatives easily can go astray if the business community is not included in the equation.

Background

Plans are being made to develop and build a World Trade Center in Oslo (WTC Oslo), as a part of the global network of the World Trade Center Association (WTCA).
The rights to build and operate a WTC in Oslo is owned by an investor group fronted by Per L. Saxegaard, managing partner at Norden Investment Banking.
The Oslo Chamber of Commerce functions as a secretariat for the WTC Oslo.

World Trade Center Oslo – Main Concept
“A building for conscious and innovative businesses”

The main concept of the World Trade Center Oslo (WTC Oslo) is initiated based on a wish to contribute to increased focus and awareness with respect to corporate social responsibility and ethical initiatives by businesses. The belief is that this will stand the test as a business case, and gradually, as the moral culture of corporations matures, will constitute an integrated part of modern business.

WTC Oslo believes that the market now is ready for a value-based office center that will support this goal.

The vision of the WTC Oslo is to become a center for conscious businesses, businesses that are aware of their social- and environmental responsibilities, and that through their values and ethical business practices contribute to sustainable growth and development.

WTC Oslo targets small- and medium sized companies and organizations in all lines of business. The common denominator is that they share one or more ethical and social values, and are conscious about the role as a positive change agent.  Some will fit the description by means of their core products- or services (eg. companies involved in green technology or environmental organizations), others by means of their positive engagement in ethical and social issues such as ethical trading, climate change, environmental issues, human rights, employee relations, and philantropy.

The main concept of WTC Oslo is based on the following thoughts

  • The world is facing big and universal challenges, with climate change and social differences probably being the biggest threat to humanity.
  • We have as individuals, companies, and organizations never had a greater common goal in contributing to a viable and sustainable future.
  • An international business community which acts consciously and responsibly, will play a decisive role in solving the challenges of our time.
  • The megatrend which is gradually transforming international business is the growth of conscious capitalism, including valuedriven consumers, socially responsible investors, green business, and ethical trading. The companies that understand this now, will also be the business successes of tomorrow.
Mission
  • The goal of WTC Oslo is to become a center for conscious businesses, businesses that are aware of their social- and environmental responsibilities, and that through their values and ethical business practices contribute to sustainable growth and development.
  • WTC Oslo aims to make visible a modern and innovative business community, which sees its natural responsibility in contributing to solve the challenges the world is facing.
  • WTC Oslo wants to appeal to the companies and organizations which are, or want to become, leaders in the field of corporate social responsibility, green business and ethical business practices.
  • WTC Oslo wants to be a catalyst for cooperation and open dialogue between the business community and organizations, based on the idea of a common goal.
The Building
  • The total size of the project is stipulated to 30.000 – 40.000 sqm.  In addition to office space for small- and medium sized companies, the building can potentially house an international hotel, conference center, event hall, restaurants, informal meeting points, a gym etc.
  • WTC Oslo will be a signature real estate project with high architectual qualities, but still the main focus will be on values and contents.
  • WTC Oslo will be centrally located in downtown Oslo.
  • WTC Oslo is planned as a low energy “green” building, with an emphasis on as low emissions as possible throughout the process, from the development phase and construction, to operation and maintenance.
  • Focus on consciousness in all parts of the value chain. All parties involved in the planning and construction of the WTC Oslo should have a common set of core values that supports the vision of the project.
